Word Clouds

Teacher friends,

Word Clouds or Tag clouds have been used for a bit and I must say that they are pretty cool. If you teach and love words, you may want to think about checking out some word cloud websites.

Word clouds are simply “visual representation for text data, typically used to depict keyword metadata (tags) on websites, or to visualize free form text.” According to Wikipedia, they have only been around less than twenty years.

Although a bit passé, I still think they look groovy and the math teacher in me loves the fact that font size is determined by frequency of use of each word. There is a logarithm and everything.

Word clouds are used when you want to visualize text. Each year, during students’ report card narratives, I create word clouds using each of my students’ narratives.

Each narrative becomes a work of art that I later print and use as the front cover of their non-digital and digital portfolio. They really look cool and the kids appreciate the thought. Many parents take and frame them for posterity.

Find a word cloud site and try it out.

Have fun!
